Freight shipping, also known as freight forwarding, or freight transportation, offers many advantages when it comes to mailingpackages, whether you are a business or an individual. Businesses such as FedEx are considered as transportation businesses. Their purpose is to move items overland, sea, and air for their members. They are well-known because they have fastservice and can save their customers money on their items. When choosing whether or not to usea freight transporting company there are a few items to consider. These include items such as cost of shipping a item yourself versus using ashipping company, the options available to companies that may not be an option for you, and finally therules that you’ll have to deal with yourself if you don’t use a shipping corporation.

There are many obvious advantages of using freight forwarding to get yourparcel where it needs to go. The main reason is convenience. The freight forwardingbusiness calculates the cost of shipping for you, no matter where or how you’re trying tosend your package, and they deal with all the complex codes of shipping. This not onlysaves you from overpaying on postage, but it also means you don’t have to deal with tedious rules aboutshipping to other countries, or dealing with complicated shipping methods such as airplane or boat. A second largeadvantage is purchasing insurance. Businesses can insure your parcels so if there is any damage, or theparcel is lost, you won’t have to pay for it. They also offer a variety of shipping times, so that you can pay to have youritem arrive the next day.

Never the less, as with all good things there are always disadvantages, and freight shipping is noexception to the rule. With freight transportation, your packages are more likely to get lost ornot arrive on time. While this is rare and you can buy insurance to cover incidents like this, the biggera business is the more items they have to monitor. It is unavoidable that afew will get lost over time. There is also the problem of items getting damaged during the shipping process. Not allcompanies are as careful as they should be, and when many packages are shipped together, biggeritems can damage more fragile packages.

However, the disadvantages from freight intermodel transporation are little enough to make it worth yourtime. The amount of time and money you’ll save is usually worth the minimal risks of loss or damage. When you want tomail a large number of items, businesses may be able to give you a discount onthem as a whole. Regardless of the charges, you will save yourself extra shipping costs, and be able to expand yourclient base globally when you use a large association tosend your packages. Once you find a business you are comfortable with, you can continue to use their services in the future to ensure that all your packages arrivesafely and on time.

When deciding if freight transportation might be a profitable business, the first thing you must do is take a look throughout your residence. Look at your garage, kitchen or office and find something that didn`t get transported as freight. More than likely, almost every item you posses was somehow transported by either rail, boat or a truck over the course of its journey to arrive in your possession.

Once you realize the fact that transportation services is about the most wide reaching industry you can think of, it`s time to decide if you want to attempt to start your own freight transportation business.

Being as the industry is so large, there is plenty of opportunities for even a small startup to build business and make a reasonable profit. The decision you must make is which sector of the industry would be most beneficial to you. Beginning in the early part of the 1900s, there was a need to manage and organize the shipments of cargo from point A to point B in a more economical fashion. With the integration of the trucking and airline industry into what was traditionally just a job of the railroad conglomerates, a more sophisticated formulation needed to occur to get the products from producer to market. This new method was dubbed intermodal transportation.

Regulatory restrictions on which companies could mastermind shipments and which manner of transportation they could be shipped on changed heavily during the 1970s. This created an explosion in the business of organizing the shipments via intermodal transportation. Tertiary logistical organization of freight shipping is key to the existence and growth of the transportation services sector.

Because the sector is so immense, there is a diverse range of different businesses that all profit and have a role in the intermodal transportation services sector. The key player in every shipment involving freight transportation is a freight broker. This individual or firm performs as a middle man to link shippers with freight carriers. They organize the process and figure out how the items will get form point A to point B. The person who sends the freight is the shipper. He operates with a broker to get the cargo picked up and on their way.

A motor carrier is the company that supplies truck transportation. The freight forwarder is a business that receives various types of goods, consolidates the smaller shipments and arranges for larger intermodal transportation such as rail, sea or air. An import export broker facilitates the relations between U.S. Customs and other government organizations as well as international governments. These individual positions open up a multitude of different opportunities that definitely make the freight transportation commercial enterprise to be profitable business venture.

The only thing to understand about the intermodal freight transportation services industry is that it is a consistently altering entity. While each different type of business may seem unassociated, each step of shipment overlaps. Thereby certain entities may direct many of these positions.

If you are in fleet management, it is no use worrying over the time bunking by your driving staff. As an answer to all you worries, GPS fleet Tracking System is there. Let us explore more about it.

Time Management

Time constraint is a big problem in fleet management business too. In many cases the owners of Nvocc Forwarder fleet vehicles find their drivers deliberately doing overtime. Now with the help of GPS (Global Positioning System) one can keep an eye over the working activities of the driving staff. The overhead costs too can be saved to add more to the profit. If the staff takes longer route deliberately in order to earn bucks in form of overtime, this can be discouraged easily.

Boost up Productivity

GPS infused fleet tracking system is a very powerful at the hands of the fleet owners to draw more profits in the business. Irresponsible working behavior, shirking work and killing time for extra money is prevalent among the drivers of fleet transport segment. These unwanted working behaviors can be handled and monitored by GPS tracking system. The unproductive driving staff thus can be spotted and expelled if necessary. In this way the work productivity is improved and maintained. Experts have recorded an increase in productivity to the tune of 40 per cent while using GPS enabled tracking system.

Big Fuel Savings

Fuel is the key input in the transport segment. It is a precious resource to be saved. Due to the steep rise in the fuel cost the operating costs of the fleet and dispatch activities has also increased worldwide. GPS infused fleet tracking system is greatly useful in saving significant amount of fuel per vehicle in each trip. From the point of view of fuel conservation also this is an important method. The intentional as well as natural reason of the longer route of travel taken by the vehicle drivers can be monitored well

Better Client Satisfaction

The working efficiency of the transport operations are improved manifold with GPS fleet tracking system. This affects positively the operational efficiency of the company making the business cost-effective and profitable. Moreover the customer satisfaction is assured well in addition to cutting down of extra and hidden costs. Like in every business field the better customer satisfaction helps the company to consolidate in the market amid competition.

Efficient Monitoring of Movement

An owner remains regularly in touch with the movement of the vehicles while at a distance. The fuel and time required are greatly minimized. The extra benefit of the tracking system based on GPS system is that the vehicles remains within monitoring reach, thus theft is prevented.

User-friendly Automation

With help op map based fleet tracking system a fleet owner can keep an eagle eye over the vehicle movement via a computer screen. In addition establish two way communications with the fleet drivers over the mobile phone. Important necessary instructions can be conveyed to staff with respect to particular locations along the path. Data recorded through the tracker can be used for scrutiny or inspection later. Even the driving staff may be instructed to adopt a particular route or change one.

Are you getting ready to take a long trip and don’t want to drive your own car? This is when having a company transport your car comes in handy. But, how do you know for sure who you can trust and more importantly how do you select a company that is more equipped to safely and securely relocate you vehicle and have it arrive in one piece? So the answer to that is very easy and here is why I can say that.

You know that really, it doesn’t matter if you’re transporting a regular ordinary car or you have something very fancy and expensive, people in general just want to have their possessions taken care of if they are paying for that kind of service. So to know what you can expect to get you first have to know what to look for form auto shippers. You do have several options, but since we are talking about hiring a company to take that road trip instead of you we’ll talk about that version.

Shipping your vehicle can make sense and hiring a good auto transporter to do it can make the process even easier for yourself. You can hire private auto transporters which are just like any other door to door moving company; they arrange to pick up your car at a convenient time for you, load it onto a truck and deliver it wherever you tell them to. That sounds simple and easy enough right. Don’t be so fooled.

Make sure that that the particular company you just hired is registered and insured with the state department and make you keep in contact with that company. A good clue in making sure that a company is a bit more offering in the “state of the art” department when it comes to good communication is that they have their trucks equipped with satellite tracking systems that you can log into and track where your car is at all times.

Make sure that the driver of the shipping truck is carrying a cell phone with him or them. Just in case you are not near a computer you need to still be able to track the truck. Get the driver’s number, either from them or the company before you ship your car. This way you’ll always be in contact with your vehicle.

When you’re trying to stay on budget, keep in mind that some vehicles obviously cost more to transport than others. Size and weight are a huge factor in cost. To save some money on your trip doesn’t fill up the gas tank. Some people think that they are doing themselves a favor so that they don’t have to bother with it when you get to where you are going in fear that gas prices might be higher. It’s a good idea to keep all fluids low to save on the weight of the car. That will save you a lot of money.

Another good tip is for you to removing all objects from the outside of the car as well as things you left sitting in the car. This will ensure that nothing shifts during shipping and damages the interior. Do you have any idea how much poultry costs to repair? Believe me, it’s a lot. More importantly so that anything exposed doesn’t get stolen. Always get your quotes in writing. Ask for a binding estimate or a not to exceed estimate. That will save you some money as well.

The transportation industry has been with us for a very long time and so has the language associated with it, although it changes from time to time as the means of transport changes. Consider, first, how many methods of transportation there are, and how many facets of language have come about as a result. From the horse and buggy days of the early Twentieth Century, we have progressed to an age of fast sports cars, homes on wheels, megaships, and the Boeing Shuttle Carrier, a craft large enough to ferry a space shuttle.

Family transportation has gone from the buckboard to the compact car to the minivan to the monster motor home, a house on wheels as long as a semi-truck and trailer. In the process, it’s added intriguing terms to our transportation dictionary.

Some terms have various meanings, even within the industry. “Ballast” is heavy material put into the hold of a ship to enhance stability. According to our own transport dictionary, it is gravel or rock packed onto a railroad bed to hold the track level, inhibit plant growth and distribute the load. Ballast, of course, brings with it a need for a “ballast fork,” a steel tool similar to a pitchfork but with more tines, closer together, to shovel rock. A traffic controller may keep track of trains speeding toward each other, or he may verbally control the flight path of airplanes, using radar to see their positions in the sky. A traffic controller, who may be a policeman or a flagman, may direct traffic around an accident scene, a road construction site, or a funeral cortege.

Railroad work brought about some unusual machinery, not all yet identified in the list of transport terms. A “high-railer” for example, is a heavy duty truck with four steel rail wheels that can be lifted to allow highway travel, or lowered to allow the truck to travel on railroad tracks. A high rail, however, is a main track.

Some more colorful transport terms are “baby lifter”—a brakeman; “bastard tow”—an ocean-going tow made up of dissimilar-sized barges; “tire-kicker”—a person looking at new or used cars who is unlikely to buy; and “fender-bender”—a minor traffic accident in a car. A “crummy” is a bus used to transport workers to a job site.

The transportation has brought about the “crash dummy,” an electronic figure that records the blows and potential injuries that might be received in an auto accident. There is a large field in the desert outside Phoenix, AZ, where new cars are deliberately driven into each other and into walls in order to determine how well their construction protects the “passenger compartment” and grade them accordingly. Crash dummies are used to show how badly injured a passenger would be in an accident.

Nowadays people can make shipments to the other end of the world in a matter of hours, something that was unimaginable only a century ago. Without air freight shipping, sending merchandise between continents would be expensive and it would take days or even weeks. Besides speed, planes offer the advantage of cost.

If you use air freight shipping you can distribute your product all over the world. Because shipping planes are used only for this reason, they offer you a lot of room for your freight and you won’t have any problems in sending a large item. Air freight shipping is the only way to send items of certain sizes that can’t fit in a normal truck. This means that some people use this shipping option often only because the freight gets faster and there are almost no size limitations.

Air freight shipping can also guarantee you that your freight will arrive safely at the destination. Unlike truck freight, thousands of plane leave every day across the world and you won’t have trouble finding a route that goes through your local airport. Basically, if you want to send something today, you will find a plane available. Another important service that is offered by freight shipping companies is the online tracking option. It is completely free and you will always know the location of your package.

Each type of freight shipping method has its advantages and disadvantages, but air shipping is probably the best because it offers speed, low costs, shipment tracking and large space for large items. It has become the solution to many problems and this method is still a multi-billion dollar business. You can’t go wrong with air freight shipping.

Airline shipping is considered an add-on service which many of the cargo transportation companies offer as one of their services. Many of the shipping companies already offer a ray of services depending on the type of cargo and location being delivered. Thus, airline shipping companies that are responsible for transporting passengers will have different criteria or services than of a shipping company involved in transporting goods.

Airline shipping services are usually used to ship commodities across long distances and in very short amount of time. These cargo or freight carriers can sometime be part of a passenger airline or dedicated cargo shipping airline. Furthermore, these freight carriers may also be dedicated transportation logistics companies who provide services to a business and provide end to end logistics services.

When deciding to obtain a airline shipping, it is important to understand the perks that comes with airline shipping. Airline shipping companies will offer extra features as incentives to use their services so be sure to take full advantage of their generosity. These little extra features offered by the companies can make the difference between a pleasant shipping experience and a horrible one. In addition, always take notice in airport security laws, shipping requirements, insurances policy, and foreign jurisdictions on cargo transportation.

Airline shipping companies knows that customers and business alike must rely on them to operate effeiciently and they must guarantee not only the safe delivery of the cargo, they must make sure to a bid by the contracted price, speed, cost and delivery date. Only then an airline shipping company can be considered reliable and trust worthy.

The increasing economic importance of implementing real-time vehicle tracking as part of a commercial company’s mobile resource management policy can now be viewed as essential for comprehensive operational control, remote driver security and fuel savings. Dearer oil is increasing costs for many businesses – particularly those with large fleets of vehicles – and is adding a powerful financial impetus to the search for fuel efficiencies.

Technology has a significant role to play in reducing fuel consumption, which also has clear environmental benefits.

An example of a measurable fuel saving combined with a corresponding reduction in carbon emissions is Interserve, a building management company, who have both saved 15 per cent of its fuel costs and seen a drop in CO² by tracking its vehicles with satellites.

With rising fuel costs, retailers are smart-routing to avoid traffic jams, either by combining deliveries, improving fleets or reconfiguring routes. This is to maximise the number of deliveries while minimising time and distance. It has been found that even restricting the number of left hand turns can improve on time, efficiency and energy savings.

Using GPS vehicle tracking technology and viewing interactive maps online enabled the company to see where it was losing money, time and wasting fuel – such as on duplicated journeys.

Yet in some countries, there are legal concerns over using tracking technology. In the UK, for example, the law stipulates that companies must tell drivers if they use telematics to monitor vehicles for anything other than asset tracking.

Interserve is using Cybit’s Fleetstar-Online. It works over a web browser and reports vehicle locations every 20 seconds. It also displays mileage information, live traffic information and exception reporting. Fuel bills were estimated to be cut between 10 and 20 per cent.

Vehicle Tracking

An advanced vehicle tracking system is a fully modular, scalable, vehicle tracking and management information solution, using real time GPS, and designed to produce a more effective and profitable management of a mobile service workforce. By accessing real-time information to improve operational control and remote worker security, powerful business changing strategic data can be reviewed with configurable reports.

Fleet Tracking / Transport and Logistics

Applications of commercial vehicle tracking solutions in the fields of transport, logistics, haulage and multi-drop delivery environments can include optimised fleet utilisation, real-time operational enhancements and dynamically remote-managed fleets.

Fleet tracking is scalable by design and interfaces with the logistics industry’s leading back-office systems.

Powerful reports may be generated that assist the management of service level agreements and provide automatic proof of delivery. Fleet tracking information can also deliver data to enhance strategic business decision-making throughout an entire 24 hours, in real time.

Mobile Asset Tracking / Public Sector & Utilities

Real-time service and management data delivered to the public and utilities sector.

Complying with duty of care legalisation, mobile asset tracking aims to enhance vehicle utilisation and revolutionise public sector service delivery.

GPS vehicle tracking is linked with specialised applications to include gully cleaners, road sweepers and gritters, which are all supported by some of the leading OEM’s.

Highways Agency / Telematics winter maintenance tracking

A winter maintenance tracking solution will be supplied on the Highways Agency’s new winter service fleet which is responsible for keeping all England’s motorway and major A roads free from snow and ice in winter. The first vehicles will be on the road autumn 2008.

The Highways Agency’s contractors will have local visibility of the fleet’s activity, access to a real-time national view of the fleet as well as detailed performance management information. The Highways Agency will be able to monitor route treatment progress in real-time and provide customers with more reliable information on road conditions. The telematics system gives the contractors the ability to monitor location-based information, monitor planned versus actual activity, to react to problems and to be confident that roads have been adequately treated. The system also records whether the vehicles are spreading, the rate of and pattern of spreading, width and lane position, and ploughing.

The current worldwide market for Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receiver technology is estimated at more than £1 billion and is expected to grow to more than £15 billion during the next 10 years.

The impact of pirates on materials shipments has come to the forefront of world news as thieve based in Somalia have seized ships in recent months. The problem has grown into huge proportions that are affecting the bottom line of shipping business and manufacturers around the world.

Somalia has been without a functional government for several years. A civil war ripped the country apart and the government that is officially in charge of the country is unable to stop the illegal activity on the coastal waters. The economy is in a wreck and those who were in in the unofficial armies and poor fishermen have learned to put together their skills and engage in profitable tactics that have produced what add up to between 150 and 200 million dollars in ransoms.

Armed pirates move towards a ship that is sailing around the Horn of Africa, take the crew, ship and cargo hostage, and then demand several million dollars in ransom be given in exchange for the freedom of the crew and ship. The pirates are interested only in the ransom and have been willing to release the crew and merchandise without harm when their demands are met. For a while, shipping business and foreign ruling bodies were more than willing to pay the ransoms to secure the freedom of the sailors and cargo. The pirates have been brazen, even seizing Russian tanks for a brief period of time.

The impact of pirates on freight transportation businesses has been destructive, not only millions of dollars in ransoms but costly delays. Disrupted shipments have created a new wrinkle in delivery dates as most sailors and cargos have stayed under Somali control for a month or two at a time before being released. The logistics company has the responsibility of organizing the transportation of freight and is made to appease shipment purchasers as the freight lies in Somali ports undelivered.

Multi-national incidents have accelerated as governments have chosen to respond with an dangerous military response. The military ships began patrolling international waters but have now moved into Somali national waters with the government’s approval. The military presence has slowed the pirates but the problem remains.

Where ransoms are being made, sophisticated weaponry is available. Pirates are brandishing with weapons, typically a real danger to unarmed or lightly dangerous sailors on the attacked ships. Speedboats are the vessels preferred and ships stand little chance of getting away from them.

Countries as diverse as South Korea, Japan, India, Russia and the United States have sent their militaries to escort their ships through the area. As weaponry has arrived, inevitable altercations between assaulting pirates and the opposing navies have led to the demise of pirates and innocent civilians. An Indian vessel even shot at on another vessel that was erroneously believed to be occupied by pirates, but wasn`t.

The psychological affect on civilian crews has led to near panic when suspected pirates have approached. Captured crews have been treated well so far but there’s no guarantee that this will continue.
